Yasuke was a formidable African-born warrior who rose to prominence in 16th-century Japan during the late Sengoku period — a time defined by civil war and shifting power. Arriving in Japan with Portuguese Jesuits, Yasuke quickly earned the respect of Oda Nobunaga, one of the era’s most powerful daimyo. Impressed by his strength and presence, Nobunaga granted him the rare honor of becoming a samurai and welcomed him into his inner circle.
